Protecting Renters

Protecting Renters

Australia has one of the most out-of-control rental markets in the world. People looking to rent a home often find themselves competing against dozens of other applicants, facing application discrimination and unable to secure a fixed-term lease.

Rights and protections for renters

Renting is a long-term reality for more people than ever before, but people who rent are getting a raw deal. Too often, rental properties are used as a way for dodgy landlords to maximise their income at the expense of tenants’ security, safety and rights.

Stopping Rental Bidding

When people find a home they like, they often get trapped in ‘rental auctions’ which drive up the cost to secure a home.

Creating the home you want

For those lucky enough to have an application approved, the problems don’t stop there.

People who rent face soaring prices and unfair rent increases, poor conditions, leaks and broken appliances that are not fixed in a timely manner, and no guarantees of staying beyond a one-year lease.

It’s very difficult to feel at home in a property that doesn’t even allow for the simple things – like hanging a picture frame – but it’s almost impossible to set down roots if you face annual upheaval.

A home for your pet

Many landlords discriminate against the most important member of our household, our pet. People renting with pets face increased discrimination that leaves them with little choice but to compromise on the quality and location of their home, or hide the fact they have a pet. You shouldn’t have to chose between the place you love and the animals you love.

Everyone needs a home where they can feel secure, live comfortably and be part of the community. Stand with us to make this a reality.

The Greens’ Plan to fix housing will:

Give stability to people who rent

Create a national minimum standard for rental homes that includes indefinite leases with a minimum notice period of three months for termination by the landlord and prohibits ‘no-grounds’ evictions

Making homes affordable

Regulate the amount and frequency of rent rises and stop ‘rental bidding’ which force potential tenants into an unfair rental auctions

Creating a home, not just a house

Allow people to rent with their pets, make minor and reversible changes (like hanging pictures), and ensuring all homes meet energy efficiency and security standards

Secure rights for everyone who rents

Increase funding for Tenancy Advice Services by $10 million a year so they can provide effective advice to people who are renting and help them exercise their rights
