Our home is the centre of our lives. Without a comfortable and secure home it is hard to go to work, raise a family, maintain our health, or be part of our local communities.
There are more people experiencing homelessness than ever before
On average more than 100,000 Australians are homeless each night.
More than a quarter of those people are children under the age of 18, and around a quarter are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians.
Liberal/National and Labor parties are making
the problem worse
Successive governments have chronically underfunded public housing and homelessness services, but they have weakened our social safety net meaning more and more people cannot afford somewhere to call home.
Rather than ensuring that everyone has a place to live, the Liberal/National government have sought to criminalise and vilify people who have been made homeless.
The Liberal/National government has dismantled and defunded a number of homelessness and housing affordability programs and have failed to deliver the solutions that are needed to tackle homelessness.
Family violence is the number one reason why people experience homelessness
After years of funding cuts, homelessness support services and women’s refuges are struggling to meet demand. Homelessness Australia estimates that 423 people are turned away from services each night.
